Cumbria Soundcamp - Eskdale

May 2023 marks the 10th edition of the annual sound and ecology festival, Soundcamp. In collaboration with RE Drift and invited artist Jo Ray, this year's Cumbria Soundcamp takes in a ride on the 'La'al Ratty' narrow gauge railway, a guided walk in the Eskdale Valley and artist-led activities in celebration of Dawn Chorus Day.
Schedule:
- 11:00 - Participants meet at Ravenglass mainline railway station
- 11:25 - Narrow gauge railway journey to Eskdale
- 12:15 - Arrive Boot station, Eskdale. Guided walk (approx 2.5 miles)
- 14:00 - Packed lunch at Eskdale Mill.
- 14:45 - Artist activity at Eskdale Mill
- 16:10 - Return to Ravenglass via narrow gauge railway
- 16:50 - Arrive Ravenglass / event ends
- 18:00 - Main line trains depart North / South from Ravenglass
The Cumbria Soundcamp is part of a network of UK and international sites taking part in the Reveil radio broadcast, which circles the earth at sunrise on a network of live audio streams. Each soundcamp is a chance to explore a place of acoustic and ecological interest through workshops, special performances, and presentations.

Jo Ray is based in Sheffield, UK. Her practices explore the interplay between imagined possibilities and lived experience, typically through lens based works, performance and installations responding to social and spatial situations, found imagery, text and archive material.

*Please note that all tickets include a ticket for the return journey to and from Eskdale. These are offered at a subsidised rate from the full price of £20 p/p. We ask all participants to please bring wet weather clothes, walking shoes / boots and a packed lunch. A full schedule and FAQ’s will be emailed to all participants during the week of 1st May.
